Faith Over Fear: Learning to Rest in What You Can’t Control

“Faith over fear.”
We say it often — but living it out is much harder than saying the words.
Fear and faith can’t coexist comfortably. For many believers, fear isn’t the absence of faith; it’s the tension between what we know and what we feel. We pray and ask God to be Lord over our lives, yet we still try to control outcomes, fix situations, and predict what’s next.
I know that tension well — there were seasons when fear had such a hold on me that I couldn’t see my way out.
If you’ve ever walked through a painful or controlling relationship, my story might resonate with you.

But true faith isn’t just believing God can — it’s trusting that He will, even when you don’t know how.
Even Jesus felt anxiety. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed in deep anguish, showing us that fear and faith can exist in the same heart — but one must eventually surrender to the other.
When fear rules us, it separates us from the fruit of His Spirit — peace, joy, patience, and rest. That’s why recognizing fear early is vital. It’s the moment we must shift from self-reliance to surrender.
Sometimes, fear doesn’t look loud or obvious — it hides behind busyness, strength, and perfectionism.
I talked about this more in a post on High-Functioning Depression — how we can seem “fine” on the outside while quietly struggling inside.

You’re not alone — and you don’t have to face it alone.

What is Fear and Anxiety?
Fear is a natural emotional response to something we perceive as dangerous or uncertain.
Anxiety is when that fear lingers — when our thoughts replay “what ifs” and future scenarios we can’t control.
Both can drain our faith, steal our peace, and cloud our ability to hear from God. But through His Word, we can learn to respond differently.
3 Practical Ways to Live Out Faith Over Fear
1️⃣ Pause and Pray Before You Plan
When fear rises, our first instinct is to act. Faith invites us to pause.
Before reacting, breathe and pray: “Lord, what do You want me to see in this moment?”
Let His peace guide your next step.
2️⃣ Speak Truth Over Your Feelings
Fear speaks lies — faith speaks life.
Write down Scriptures that remind you of God’s promises.
Meditate on verses like Romans 8:28:
“All things work together for good to those who love God…”
Repeat them until your heart believes what your lips declare.
3️⃣ Practice the Serenity Prayer
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.”
This prayer helps us release control and rest in God’s plan.
Faith Over Fear Is a Daily Choice
To me, “faith over fear” means accepting that I can’t control everything — and trusting that God has my best interest in mind even when I can’t see it.
It means choosing rest when my mind wants to race. It’s waking up and saying, “God, I trust You,” even when I don’t know what today will bring.
Because faith reminds us: we don’t have to know the plan when we know the Planner.
